BSS Blog Hop: Bettie Page

Hi All!

If you're here for the Bombshell Stamps Blog Hop, you're in the right place! You should be coming from Suzie's blog.

On April 22, 1923, a star was born. A star that we all know. A star that, without her, Bombshell Stamps may not even exist (if I may be so presumptuous). Who is it? None other than Bettie Page. What better month to pay homage to the Pin-Up Queen herself than the month of her birth? So for this hop, I want you to give Ms. Page some love. Make a project, any type of project, using her as inspiration. There are thousands of images to view, lots of quotes she has said, and others have said about her. Here are some photos of Ms. Page.

"I think that she was a remarkable lady, an iconic figure in pop culture who influenced sexuality, taste in fashion, someone who had a tremendous impact on our society." - Hugh Hefner. Betty was a pioneer in fetish modeling in the 1950's and has since become known as The Queen of Pin Ups.

I decided to go with sex appeal for this hop. And there's nothing sexier than a drop-dead gorgeous machine sparkling in the sun on a hot afternoon in the middle of the summer.

Four wheels can move your body, but two can move your heart. That's why I chose to use the "Vintage Motorcycle" set for this card.

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think in the comment section below.

Now, onto the rest!

Interview with a Seller: Marie Jensen

Bloggerland!
Happy Thursday! The week is almost over!! Thursdays mean Interviews, so here we go with Marie Jensen!

1. What’s your name and shop name and what do you do? My shop name is DeviantCandy and my name is Marie Jensen and I create unusual horror sculptures/jewelry and some fantasy.

2. Where are you located? Great Falls, Montana

3. What’s the favorite part of your craft? Cutting up blood, veins and making body parts.

4. How long have you been crafting? Over a year

5. What’s your favorite thing to make? Zombies are my absolute favorite thing. The second favorite thing to make are my dragons.

6. What kind of camera do you use to shoot? Olympus

7. Who or what models your items? I use a lightbox to model my items

8. What's the most rewarding part of running your own business? I enjoy making people smile and connecting with fellow horror fans.

9. What's the most challenging part of running your own business? Time management is my most challenging part of running a business and staying organized. I think a lot of artists struggle with this, but I'm slowly gaining my own techniques for dealing with it and managing better.

10. On average, how many things do you create per week? Depending on the sculpture, I try to make 2-3 items a day.

11. What inspires you? Zombie pictures, movies, retro zombie and most importantly, my family and fans with their awesome ideas.

12. Take me thru your creative process. I don't really have a process. Sometimes I visualize what I want to create, or I sometimes have a reference picture. On most days, the clay decides what it wants to be.

13. What is your best advice to blossoming crafters? Don't give up and don't think about your competition. I didn't start off with a lot of sales, or fans, so don't get discouraged because of someone else's success. Keep motivated and give yourself little goals and try something new with your crafting.

Hope you can see my responses...thanks for featuring me !

Marie, your advice to blossoming crafters was probably the best advice I've had in my interviews. Its so important to stay motivated and focus on you and yours and not compare yourself with anyone else. Thanks for submitting your interview. :)

New in my Shop

Welcome Back!
Its Monday again (I know, I know) and that means another New in my Shop.
This week I've added more stamps to the shop. More importantly, I broke in a new stamp set that hadn't touched ink before to create this card and added it to my shop.

I used Bombshell Stamps "Vintage Motorcycle" set, which was perfect for this card. What do you think?

Stuff I Love: The Golden Girls

Welcome Back!

Many of you may not know this, but I'm a die-hard Golden Girls fan. I've loved this show for more than 25 years. I think it's because I used to watch it when I'd go to my grandma's house when I was little.

The writing was the best part, I think. You can't have a number one show without excellent writing. The Golden Girls even beat out The Cosby Show, which, in the 80's was the show to beat. According to wikipedia and interviews with the actresses, TGG received positive reviews throughout most of its run and won several awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twice. It also won three Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.[1] All four stars each received an Emmy Award throughout the series' run and had multiple nominations.[2][3] The series also ranked among the top ten highest-rated programs for six out of its seven seasons.[4]

Thanks for taking part in this Stuff I Love today.

Cheers!

Interview with a Seller: Alison Heikkila

Welcome Back!
It's been a while since I have had the chance to post an Interview, so I decided to ask my friend Alison a few questions because her work has always inspired me very much - and not to mention her blue hair!! Check out her blog and see what I mean. Here are her answers.

1. What’s your name and shop name and what do you do?
My name is Alison Heikkila and my Etsy Shop is SkyPrincess

2. Where are you located?
I'm from Long Island, NY

3. What’s the favorite part of your craft?
My favorite part??? I don't know if I have a favorite...I enjoy the entire process so much. But, I guss if I had to choose, it would be the completion of a project that I am really happy with. That deep breath that you take when you look at something, and say, "Ahhh, it's done." And then if you are really lucky, you say "And I really like it!"

4. How long have you been crafting?
I've been crafting since I came out of the womb! Seriously, from a very young age. My Mom is a huge crafter, so she of course always had fun things for me to use around the house to make little projects.
5. What’s your favorite thing to make?
This is another tough question! I went to college for a silversmithing degree, as jewelry has always been a deeply rooted passion of mine. But, scrapbooking has really come up to bat with making jewelry. So, those two things would be my favorites, although sadly, I don't get to do either of them as often as I would like to.

6. What kind of camera do you use to shoot?
I use a Canon Powershot SD1400 Digital Elph. I always buy Canons. I love 'em.

7. Who or what models your items?
I use a variety of things, and sometimes people! Although, my sister is really great with photography, so I will often let he get behind the lens, and I get to be the model. But, I also like to use found objects, like leaves and twigs, and I balance my work among them.

8. What's the most rewarding part of running your own business?
Seeing how people respond to what I make them! Whether it is a custom piece, or something they just pick up and buy, it's great to see their faces, or read their feedback.

9. What's the most challenging part of running your own business?
There are a lot of challenges! I owned a scrapbooking store for a few years, and I can tell you, there were so very many challenges! Making your money back is probably the biggest. It is so hard to put a price on crafts. You not only put in a lot of time, but so much of yourself into what you make. That's probably the hardest thing... figuring out prices and making that money.

10. On average, how many things do you create per week?
I would say that I probably make from 6-10 things each week. Most often they are cards, so I can get those done fairly quickly. But lately, I have also been making necklaces and key chains with washers, and I can (literally) bang out a few of those in a day.

11. What inspires you?
Everything! My kids, nature, my mom. Fabric, paper, everything I see can be inspirational. I never go to one specific place for inspiration...it's all around me. Pinterest is a great source of inspiration lately too!

12. Take me thru your creative process.
It really depends on what I am working on. If I need to use some sort of stamped or digital image, I always start there. With the coloring. I just play. I never worry about whether or not I have something to coordinate with it. Because, I have so much stuff, I am bound to! And if perchance I don't, I'll make something. So, after I'm done coloring, I will gather scraps of paper that I think will look good. Then I try to play around with those scraps to get them to make a cool layout. After I get all of that assembled and cut, I will look for embellishments that work. Sometimes I have to alter things, or make them myself, but I always enjoy doing that. The last thing I do is glue. I am constantly changing things up as I find new scraps or materials, so I always need to glue last. Otherwise, I would never be happy with the finished project!

13. What is your best advice to blossoming crafters?
Be yourself! Look to others for ideas, but never lose yourself. You need to be at the root of all of your creations. Don't make it into work, always make it about playing and fun!

You can find Alison's shop here. You can check out her blog here!

Thanks for the interview Alison, this was really fun!

In My Studio

Hi All!

My ATG gun arrived FINALLY! It's big, its pink, and it's loaded - watch out! I feel like I should be wearing a gun holster on my hip with I wield that thing!

I made a trip up north to one of my favorite stores, the Joann's Super Store! I could spend HOURS in there, and a literally did. 2 hours, to be exact. I bought acrylic paints and crack paint to make my Crackle Tin Tutorial. So, this week I've been playing with acrylic and crackle paints.

I've also been scrapbooking, as you can tell from the photos.

I also tried a new technique on photo paper with alcohol inks and canned air.

I cut this ink splatter down, stamped and embossed it and mounted it on a card.

I've also been working on a small summer-themed mini album that I am not quite finished with yet, but here are a few photos of what I have so far.

Thanks for tuning in today!
I invited you to leave a comment on this blog and let me know what you think of my current projects. :-)
Cheers,
Xo, Rachael

New in my Shop

This week has been quite lax on listing new items in the shop. I ran out of glue and had to wait until my super Advanced Tape Glider came in the mail to glue anything down, so I'm a little backlogged. I did, however, have enough glue to make a simple and sweet "thanks" card last week. I thought it was appropriate for spring time in Seattle. If you've ever been to Seattle March or April, you know exactly what I'm talking about!

Here is a brand new card I created over this last weekend. Its made with photo paper, ink, rubber stamping and embossing.

That's about it for this entry.
